Southwestern Montana deputy killed in shootout

A Broadwater County, Montana Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot while pursuing a vehicle on a highway early Tuesday morning. "My wife Lisa and I offer our honest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Mason Moore". "We will do whatever we can to help and support the Broadwater County Sheriff's Office and the families impacted by this tragic incident".

Moore was shot less than 2 miles (3 kilometers) from where Montana Highway Patrol Trooper David DeLaittre was killed near Three Forks in December 2010.

The Broadwater County sheriff's office says 38-year-old Mason Moore had been a deputy for three years. He is being held on a felony deliberate homicide charge in the Missoula County jail.

Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester says the suspects fired shots at officers who pursued them for over 100 miles across parts of five counties.

Gootkin said dispatchers lost contact with Moore.

Stevens says it's a brotherhood and sisterhood among deputies, and cascade county officials know Broadwater would provide equally as much support.

Three Butte police officers were among others who chased the suspects, Lloyd and Marshall Barrus, in a high-speed chase on Interstate 90 between Butte and Missoula that involved the suspects allegedly shooting at pursuing officers.

It was spotted in Anaconda and a pursuit began westbound on I-90. The driver of the SUV has been arrested and a passenger was shot by law enforcement and taken to the hospital.

According to CBS affiliate KPAX, the incident began when a Broadwater County Sheriff's deputy pulled a vehicle over near Three Forks, about 70 miles southeast of Helena, in what's described as a "routine stop" at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers from numerous agencies joined a procession at mid-day Tuesday to transfer Moore's body from Three Forks to Billings for an autopsy.

Missoula County authorities report the passenger exited the vehicle and began shooting at multiple officers, according to KPAX. The passenger was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

The nation marked Peace Officers Memorial Day on Monday. The driver, the shooter's father, was arrested.
