Cardinal Dolan confident Pope 'got his points across' with Trump

Francis and Trump are unlikely to criticize each other so bluntly when they meet - at least in public, said Andrea Tornielli, a veteran Vatican watcher with Italy's La Stampa newspaper.

The Pope blessed a rosary for the first lady, traded jokes with the first daughter, Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner, and handed out tokens to the President's delegation. They shook hands and the pontiff asked her what she feeds the president.

Trump greeted Francis in Sala del Tronetto, the room of the little throne, on the second floor of Apostolic Palace.

Mr Trump will later meet Italy's president and prime minister. Cillizza accompanied his post with another photo of Trump and Pope Francis; this time, the pope looks plenty happy as he smiles pleasantly at Trump. Dolan said the religious leader and Trump have the potential to collaborate in a way that advances world peace.

We had a fantastic meeting."A Vatican statement said the meeting was "cordial" and that the Vatican hoped there could be "serene collaboration" between the U.S. government and the American Catholic Church, including "assistance to immigrants".The U.S. Catholic Church hierarchy opposes Trump's attempt to cut federal assistance for cities that give sanctuary to illegal immigrants".

Francis and Trump's past spats include the pope describing plans for a border wall with Mexico as not Christian and Trump evoking a possible Islamist attack on the Vatican which would make the pontiff glad to have him as president. But Pope Francis has been easing up on the dress code: "Things have become more relaxed over the last few years there are no hard and fast rules", a spokesperson for the Vatican told the Telegraph.

From the beginnings of Francis' election to the papacy, the two have sparred in the media over climate change, income inequality, and particularly immigration, especially since Trump's ascendancy into the White House.

Pope Francis also gave Mr Trump a signed copy of his 2017 peace message whose title is Nonviolence - A Style of Politics for Peace, and a copy of his 2015 encyclical letter on the need to protect the environment from the effects of climate change.

Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, had a private audience with Francis at the Vatican in 2014 that lasted 50 minutes.

He continued that journalists overheard Trump tell the pope at the end of the meeting "I won't forget what you said", although it's not clear what he was referring to. But the timing Wednesday was tight as Francis had his weekly Wednesday general audience.

Trump called the pope "disgraceful" for doubting his faith.

"For all their differences, both men say what they feel and speak clearly and freely, without holding back", said Lucetta Scaraffia, a modern history professor at Rome's La Sapienza University and the author of several books about the Vatican. In Saudi Arabia, he addressed dozens of Arab leaders and urged them to fight extremists at home and isolate Iran, which he depicted as a menace to the region.

Trump, the 13th president to visit the Vatican, also toured the Sistine Chapel. No details or timetable have yet to be established for negotiations. Trump is a noted climate skeptic.

In Brussels, team Trump will meet European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials before returning to Italy for the G7 summit in Sicily on Friday and Saturday.
