Hostage negotiators and Kane County SWAT teams were called in, according to Pat Gengler, Kane County Sheriff spokesperson. Witnesses describe the scene inside as "chaotic", and said the offender, 21-year-old Tywon Salters was running around the hospital naked.

Gengler says two female nurses were taken hostage at different points during the standoff.

The emergency room was evacuated and the rest of the hospital was operating as normal, the official said. "I just know that this is something really contained downstairs in one corner of the first floor", Gengler said.

She said that the hospital has policies and trainings in place for emergency situations such as these. The male inmate was being treated at the hospital when he gained control of the officer's weapon around 12:30 p.m.

GENEVA - A Kane County jail inmate is dead following a hostage situation at Delnor hospital in Geneva Saturday.

The prisoner was transferred to the hospital on Monday, but Mr Gengler said he could not release details as to why he was hospitalised at this stage.

Delnor Hospital, in the suburban city of Geneva, Illinois, was closed to the public during the incident, according to a statement on the city's website. CNN affiliate WLS reported visitors were not allowed entry into other parts of the 159-bed hospital. "We were able to move patients out of the ER".

FOX40 sister station WGNTV reports that the hostage standoff was underway near the E.R. of the hospital for more than four hours.
